Rembrandt Bugatti - About Artist

Since the beginning of his career, the animal sculptor Rembrandt Bugatti chose the modeling technique to express his vision of the living. The artist observed for a long time, studied and decrypted the animal behaviors at the Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes in Paris or a the Antwerp Zoo. His sculpture entirely proceeds from this contact which allowed him to recreate his favorite subjects in motion, like in our bronze Jument et son poulain. His technique, which distinguished him from his fellow animal sculptors at the time, implies a special relationship with material. Bugatti's touch is perceptible; the pressure of this hand and fingers is visible in different parts of our sculpture. As the English art critic and friend Marcel Hourteloup said in 1906 : "His fingers and a few centimeters of twisted iron wire in a racket shape are his main working tools". The original sculpture was executed in "plasticine", the only material used for its ductility and flexibility perfectly suited for the vigorous forms of his models. This work was cast by his sole editor and art dealer Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard, worldly renowned for his lost wax castings and his patinas worthy of the Renaissance ateliers. During his lifetime the young Bugatti would assign his reproduction, broadcasting and exploitation rights to Hébrard for the models that the editor bought. The creation of the Edition originale Rembrandt Bugatti by A.A Hébrard started from their encounter in 1904. To our knowledge, only six editions of our Jument et poulain are known today. The plaster molds of the two animals are in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
